Love is in the air!
Weekends for Two in Southern California: 50 Romantic Getaways is a wonderful book for the romantic in all of us. If you're looking for a great place to stay for the weekend, look no further! This book showcases 50 enchanting places to stay in Southern California when you're in the mood for love within beautiful surroundings. Each property is described in detail with room descriptions, prices and includes full color photographs. My wife and I love the Apple Farm Inn in San Luis Obispo. It's a charming country style inn that's more comfy and cozy than home and also has a great restaurant where homemade corn bread, apple cider and ice cream is featured. I love looking through this book whenever I am planning a trip away with my wife. I'm sure you'll love this book as well!

Highly recommended! Don't miss Bill Gleeson's other Weeekends for Two books for Northern California and other locales. They are great too! You'll feel warm and fuzzy just looking at these lovingly selected getaways.

YOU FOUND IT!
Yes, this is the book to get if you want a fabulous place to create extraordinary memories with your mate! We've been to The Inn At Morro Bay with it's beautiful, breathtaking view of the bay and healing surroundings (p.17); to Ducey's by the Lake (p.30) with it's rich color decor and outstanding breakfast brunch; to the Sundance Villas in Palm Springs (p.108) where we treated back-East parents to a villa with a private pool and spa and a hugh interior during their winter season; and treated newlyweds to Portofino Beach Hotel-incredible (p.74); and have gazed and dreamed about all of the other bed & breakfasts listed in this book. BUY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT!

West Coast Jazz: Modern Jazz in California 1945-1960
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (August, 1994)
Author: Ted Gioia
Average review score:

A excellent book, an incredible bargain
The best book on jazz (or any other topic!) I've read in the past few years. The author manages to sustain a wonderful balance among scholarship, human interest, and serious criticism. I thought I knew something about this topic -- found out I knew very little. The section on Brubeck's early years is, by itself, well worth the price of the book.

This is a truly great book.l
I have a rather large selection of albums from this era and this book covered many of them. I could seem to hear them in my mind as I read the book. This book not only explores the music well, but the people who played it. Would like another copy for a friend.

When Miners Sang: The Grass Valley Carol Choir (Nevada County Pioneers Series)
Published in Hardcover by Comstock Bonanza Pr (October, 2001)
Author: Gage McKinney
Average review score:

Something for everyone
When Miners Sang by Gage McKinney is a terrific book for anyone interested in Christmas music, folk music, California history, mining history, or the history of the Cornish in Grass Valley. There is something of interest for almost anyone. The book is clearly well researched, complete, scholarly, and thoroughly documented. The marvelous thing is - it is also a compelling narrative written with style and brio. I found it to be both an enjoyable and an informative read.

Cornish Miners Sing!
Fascinating accounting of local history! While covering the facts about the singing group over many years, the author has given us a picture of the lives of Cornish people who traveled around the world to settle in a small foothill gold mining town in California. Recently the connection has been made back with families in Cornwall to complete the circle. The choir has been a vehicle to tie the families together. It is so important to get these stories written down before they disappear. Thanks to Gage McKinney for doing that!

Wild Birds of California
Published in Hardcover by Companion Press (June, 2000)
Author: David Lukas
Average review score:

Lush photography, excellent for novice birders
The photography in this book is superlative and the main reason to purchase it is to admire the lush color photos of California's birds. However, I also enjoy the book because it allows me, as a novice birder, to learn to correctly identify various species. This book is much superior to an Audubon guide or a National Geographic Filed Guild to birds because each photo is huge and shows the birds to their best advantage. The photo of the elusive great gray owl is simply outstanding!

I recommend this book for anyone who has an appreciation of birds and wants to vicariously see them through this medium. It will definitely prompt every armchair birder to take to the field and spy these wondrous creatures in their natural habitat. There are several birds I saw in this book which captured my fancy immediately: the black oystercatcher and the Lazula Bunting, for instance. By seeing these photos, it prompted me to go out and beat the trails and shorelines to see each of these birds up close and "in person." A great book!

Wild about Wild Birds of California!
An outstanding book for two reasons: 1) The photographs by the 26 contributing photographers. Each one is a work of art; excelling in composition and use of color. Kudos on the photography in this book. 2) The text by David Lukas is not only informative and educational but thoroughly enjoyable reading. The text accompanying the photgraphs adds an interesting dimension to the image of the bird. Not the typical statement you would expect to read (and if you know birds, already know.) A great book to own or to give.

A Wild Coast and Lonely: Big Sur Pioneers
Published in Paperback by Wide World Pub Tetra (April, 1992)
Author: Rosalind Sharpe Wall
Average review score:

A must read for Big Sur visitors...
For anyone preparing to vacation at Big Sur, this book is a charming and compelling introduction to the "pioneers" of the coast, and to the Indians who preceeded them. In a warm, lively, personal and energetic style, Ms. Wall tells you fascinating stories of the 1800's and pre-Highway 1 Big Sur, always attempting to separate lore from fact, but reveling in both. She is also wonderfully sensitive to the "presence" and spirit of Big Sur, and tells compelling stories of protecting lights and "small brown people". From Pfeiffer to Jeffers, all the early settlers are here--by the end of the book, you feel like a compatriot in their histories. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know more about this fascinating area--I guarantee you will be informed, delighted and entertained.

One of the best books about the Big Sur area!
This is my favorite book on the history of the Big Sur coast. It is written with a passion for the most beautiful place on Earth. It has wonderful anecdotes form the author's life in Big Sur and other stories about the interesting inhabitants of the area. This is one of those books you can easily read more than once.

Excellent book, but need another copy!
My wife and I used this book quite a bit on several trips to Napa, and it was excellent for helping figure out how to get some of the smaller wineries, their hours, reservations, etc. ...

great book as a guide to California wineries, hotels & food
I used this book extensively during 2 recent trips to Napa, Sonoma & Santa Barbara. It was a great help in deciding which wineries, restaurants & hotels to visit. Well worth the price
